Sign on the door

Life with an Author Wife can be trying. Especially when attempting to make something Grand out of the mundane. Sometimes things are just not elaborate enough…

When I mentioned to my wife that I had thought of a poem to attach to the external door we mainly use as an entry, things got complicated. This sign would recommend that our guests use the main door around the corner of the house instead of the laundry door. The thing is, I had complely forgotten the poem and was trying to recall it. I was going for something short and simple, something to fit on an A6 sized card. This wasn’t it but something along the lines of

“To you who are our honored guest
please use the entrance around the corner to the west
if you are here for a delivery
stay right here and knock times three.”

Now, I know that’s not great, but as soon as I started relaying my plight and reciting parts of the poem I did remember, my Wife started “assisting” making the poem longer and longer and ever more elaborate with rhymes like “use the door that’s best”, “be sure to be robed in your finest vest”, “challenging as it may be, this test”, “and you will suceed on your thrilling Quest.” Ok, Ok so I made a few of those up. Suffice to say my A6 sized poem was quickly turning into something that would need to be printed, bound and rushed to an editor. I asked for something shorter.

“Oh, ok.” She said and if it was nothing, my Author Wife rattled off a short ditty that was just perfect. What was it, you’ll have to drop by sometime and read it, it’s outside, printed next to the laundry door.

  1. … it is?

Clearly A6 isn’t big enough – I’ve not seen this little ditty I’m afraid 😛 Must be more elaborate and use ALL the rhymes!
